Caerwys
Vibrant and colourful Caerwys is a small town with a big history. With connections to royalty stretching back hundreds of years, from Welsh princes to more recent times, the town was mentioned in the 1087 Domesday book as Cairos and is the smallest town in Britain to have a Royal Charter, granted in 1290 by King Edward I.
The first eisteddfod is reputed to have taken place in Caerwys in 1099, held by Welsh prince Gruffudd ap Cynan and further eisteddfodau took place in the town in 1523 and 1588, held by Henry VIII and Elizabeth 1 respectively, with Elizabeth declaring Caerwys as ‘the home of the eisteddfod’.
Surrounded by beautiful countryside and with many old and historic buildings, including the impressive St. Michael’s Church, there is plenty to see, and to explore. The town is well served with shops, a pharmacy, pubs and cafes, and an art gallery on the outskirts of the town showcases the best in contemporary Welsh art and crafts.
