About
Hawarden Castle

The handsome village of Hawarden boasts not one, but two, castles. Hawarden Old Castle (Castell Penarlâg), on the site of an earlier motte and bailey fortification, is a medieval Grade 1 listed building which is open to the public for just a few days each year. The later castle (Castell Penarlâg Newydd) is also Grade 1 listed and was once home to four-times British Prime Minister, William Ewart Gladstone, having previously belonged to the family of his wife, Catherine Glynne.

Nowadays Hawarden Estate, owned by Charlie and Caroline Gladstone, includes an award-winning farm shop, The Glynne Arms public house (Welsh Pub of the Year 2019), an events venue and a family-friendly campsite. The Estate plays host to many innovative events, including the Good Life Experience, a festival with great food, live music, poetry, and more, with the emphasis on enjoying life in the great outdoors.

From micro-festivals and music, to qigong and comedy, there’s always something good going on in Hawarden! Check their website for details of forthcoming events.
