Basingwerk Abbey
Founded in 1131, this Cistercian settlement was known as a major centre of Welsh literature. In the oldest part of the Abbey, the Chapter House, you can still see the remains of the benches where the monks once sat for their daily readings.
This peaceful site, which has great religious significance to this day, is the starting point for the North Wales Pilgrim’s Way, a long-distance walking route leading to the holy island of Bardsey (Ynys Enlli), ‘The Island of 20,000 Saints’.
There is an impressive information board in the Abbey grounds describing the progress and significant points of this religious trail. Pilgrim Passports can be obtained from the Visitor Centre to be stamped at the different churches on the
route.
