Things To See And Do In Ruthin
Ruthin has something to offer everyone, whether you're interested in history, culture, or outdoor activities. One of the town's most popular attractions is Ruthin Castle, which dates back to the 13th century and is now a luxury hotel. Visitors can take a tour of the castle's grounds and learn about its fascinating history. Another must-see attraction is Nantclwyd y Dre, Wales’ oldest dated townhouse.
This atmospheric house dates back to the 15th century and is filled with period furniture and artwork, offering visitors a glimpse into life in medieval Wales. Ruthin Gaol, once a Victorian Pentonville-style prison, is now a heritage attraction where people can learn about life and punishment within its walls. Ruthin Craft Centre is a striking zinc and cast stone structure with sloping roofs that reflect the nearby Clwydian hills.
It has three galleries, six artists studios, a retail gallery, educational workshops, and a café with courtyard patio. For those who love the outdoors, Ruthin is surrounded by stunning countryside, perfect for walking, cycling, and horse riding. The town is also home to several parks and gardens, including family-friendly Cae Ddol Park, with its green spaces, large wildlife pond, riverside walk, and children’s play areas.
Ruthin: Best Places To Live In Wales
Not my words, but those of The Sunday Times Best Place to Live Guide 2023, though I must confess that I am very fond of this lovely old town. Situated in the Vale of Clwyd and surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery in Wales, Ruthin is a wonderful place to visit at any time of the year.
It is blessed with a plethora of half-timbered and Georgian buildings, which jostle together along charming, narrow streets, all of which lead up to St Peter’s Square at the top of the town, overseen by the ‘Eyes of Ruthin’, a quirky building dating to the 16th century, now housing The Myddleton Grill on The Square, and so called because of the unusual arrangement of its 7 dormer windows.
The town was an important centre for trade and commerce during the Middle Ages and played a significant role in the Welsh rebellion against English rule in the 15th century.
Shopping In Ruthin
A leisurely walk around Ruthin’s shops is a delight, and as far removed from High Street shopping as you could wish for. With a wealth of independent and boutique shops that sell everything from handmade crafts to locally produced food and drink, shopping here is a joy.
The Market Hall, built in the 14th century, houses the town’s weekly market which champions local artisan producers and makers. For particular recommendations, I contacted a friend of mine who is a local resident.
Amongst others, she suggests Siop Elfair for all things in the Welsh language, including cards and gifts, GA Jones Family Butcher for high quality meat and vegetables, Just for Paws pet shop (Ruth’s dogs particularly like the peanut butter dog biscuits from here!), Choo Choo women’s clothing shop, Naturally Ethical for their range of Fair Trade and organic food and great coffee, and Lovingly Made with Threads, for haberdashery and fabric gifts.
With such a wide range of shops, from traditional ironmongers to a tattoo parlour and everything in between, there really is something for everyone.
Eating And Drinking In Ruthin
With its mineral rich soil and sweet green pastures, the Vale of Clwyd has long been renowned for the quality of its produce. With the emphasis on serving local food and drink wherever possible, Ruthin’s many cafés, pubs and restaurants bring you a true flavour of the region on a plate.
Try Y Caban, Leonardo’s Deli, and Café R at Ruthin Craft Centre, or for top quality pub grub, try Fat Boar on the Hill. Small Plates offer tapas style food, sharing platters and cocktails. If you would prefer a take-away, try Himalaya (also dine-in) or Finns Fish and Chips.
A little further out of town, but well worth the drive, you will find Sugar Plum Tearoom, Rhewl, The White Horse Restaurant, Hendrerwydd and the Three Pigeons Inn, Graigfechan.
